Turns out I broke a little more than the driver's side axle shaft in the rear 44 on the last trip before the rebuild:

Driver's shaft: gone. Ring gear: 11 broken teeth. Welded diff: cracking after 5 years. Passenger shaft: very twisted splines.

Essentially, I broke--Everything:agree:

Got spares?
There was a WHOLE scout II listed in the Trading Post recently- The guy wanted $200 for everything.
Pull the axle- send the rest to SIMS recycling, which would cover all costs.
I've got a set of spares if you need some in the interim.

Half of me says to go pick up a trading post and see if that's still listed. The other half says--Sounds like a lot of work (and diesel) for spare shafts.

Thanks for your offer on the temporary shafts--I've actually got another set here which I'll use for now. That being said, I hope you've got those in your tow rig next time we're at Crozet;).

By all rights, I should. I've already got the gears and spool for the 44 so I guess won't, unless something really tempting (and financially plausible) comes along. I'll be there one of these days.

Besides, I'm pretty gentle w/ this thing. This is all I was doing when the Scout 44 exploded:

It would be more accurate if you had video & sound of the redline attack you made on that rock.
