So shiny!

Speaking of shiny, this may be a dumb question but, when people paint the engine block is it for looks or protection from rust and other weathering?

That depends on whether you paint it black or say, fuschia.:boink:

I've taken just about everything off the block as I can. I am sorta stuck and was wondering if anyone WITH EXPERIENCE would like to help with the extraction of the engine block this weekend? And point me in the right direction.

Thanks, Adam

I hope you took lots of pictures and labeled everything that you disconnected.

(A factory service manual would help alot too.)

Adam - getting it out is not really very hard (getting it all back together is a little more difficult!). I can help you out for a couple of hours on Sat morning. Also maybe a little on Sunday morning.

Do you have a good set of hand tools there (sockets, extensions, and ratchets?)

Let me know when and where and I can also bring over the valve cover so you can check out how it fits, etc.

Is there a trick to getting the timing chain cover off for a 258. I can't seem to get the wheel off infront of it even after taking the main bolt off and the three smaller ones around it? Also does the clutch assembly need to be put on before I put the oil pan back on or does this even matter?Any and all advice welcome.

Thanks

littlejohn
08-04-2008, 06:45 PM
You'll most likely need a puller to get the harmonic balancer off (borrow one from Autozone).
Clutch has nothing to do with the oil pan, so it doesn't matter.

Mike, what was that part called we were talking about yeasterday? A Pilot bearing?

Adam - Enjoyed working with you. Also thanks to John and Daniel for the phone tech support!

Here is some general info on Pilot Bushings:

http://www.novak-adapt.com/catalog/pilot_bushings.htm

And here is the link to the pilot bushing that Novak sells for an AMC I6engine to T5 transmission. You can also call them and ask them about any other specific questions you may have. They know their stuff about transmissions, transfer cases, etc.

http://www.novak-adapt.com/catalog/pilot_bushings/amc_to_t176.htm

Don't forget to ask around about whether or not you need to use some blue threadlock on your flywheel and clutch bolts.

Glad I could help on the phone tech support.

As for the pilot bushing- everything is stock correct? If so, just go to a local parts store and get a Timken #PB79 for $2.99

- Can't hurt to use threadlock on clutch bolts.

Thanks Mike and John I sincerly appreciate all the help. I've got the pilot bearing in from napa. Also I'd like to put an open invitation out to anyone experienced and willing to help with the pilot bearing and clutch/flywheel assembly. This seems alittle more meticulous than simply bolting a new water pump on, therefore I dont want to mess this up and I just want an experienced person directing me. thanks again

Pilot bearing and clutch is pretty simple when engine is out of the vehicle- I just did a clutch in my YJ over the weekend (while engine was in Jeep). Everything pretty much bolts together.

Are you installing a new clutch? It's one of those "while you're in there" things. New clutches come with an alignment tool (plastic input shaft) to ease setup. I still have mine if you're gonna reuse your old clutch.

PM me when you're planning on working on it, my schedule is crazy, but I'm sure we could figure out a time that would work.

The harmonic balance puller I borrowed from advanced auto doesnt work. the claws are to big to get a bite on the wheel spokes. Any other ideas?

littlejohn
08-11-2008, 02:52 PM
A harmonic balancer puller should not have "jaws"
It sounds like you borrowed a gear puller.

A harmonic balancer puller will have bolts that thread into the balancer itself. It then has a cross brace and another bolt that pushes agains the crankshaft.

Go to Autozone and borrow the right tool.

This is a dumb question but its better to be safe than sorry. Does the oil cycle through with the timing chain? The reason I ask is because I have a hairline crack in the cover and I need to know if I should order a new one or if it would be a posibility to tack weld it?

I dunno what this part is but the threaded end broke off in my old engine block when I was taking it off. Therefore any info on it would be great or if you have an old one lying around you want to get rid of.

What broke off is a distribution block for the sending units for the oil pressure guage and idiot light. It will have an NPT thread, and you will be able to get a replacement at either Lowes or Northern Tool.

TEACH JP
08-12-2008, 10:36 PM
Thanks what does NPT stand for? Will that thread out of the square housing? Any advice for my previous post with the timeing chain cover.

littlejohn
08-12-2008, 10:54 PM
NPT= National Pipe Thread (not the same as normal bolt threads)
The block should be a solid piece, the sending units thread into it.
You should be able to find a similar piece, or one that will work, in the air fittings isle at Northern or Lowes.
Worst case scenario, just bolt one of the sending units into the block, and forget the other.
As for the timing cover, not a whole lot of pressure, and welding might work, might not too. Better of finding a replacement.

TEACH JP
08-13-2008, 12:20 PM
Would quadratech be my best bet for getting a new Timing chain cover? Also no luck with Lowes or Northern. I guess Ill just thread one of them on. Which one is more important?

Big Ron
08-13-2008, 02:18 PM
brass npt fittings are in the plumbing isle at lowes. They are on display with the for sale peices in the drawers.....a few isles over from the bolts...can't miss it.

TEACH JP
08-18-2008, 02:36 PM
Do I need any kind of tool or the same puller to put the harmonic balancer back on or will it simply tighten itself to the amount of pressure?

TEACH JP
09-14-2008, 03:02 PM
After being at school for several weeks I have realized I can not just swing back home and work on the engine. I have decided to hire someone, or a shop to finish puting my engine back together. The engine block is bolted in palce thanks to the help of little John. Therefore all that I need is the parts put back on the engine. If you know someone with considerable experience with jeep engines who needs some extra money let me know. Also if you know a good local shop that would be affordable. Let me know. I simply do not have the time to finish this build myself.

Thanks alot
