Today I started in ernest making the needed repairs to my WJ so it will pass inspection. I have been collecting parts for a while and still have some to come in. To be quite honest this involves some upgrades as well as regular repairs, but who, if given the chance, would just use stock parts when you could upgrade.

My WJ has needed to have the bushings replaced since my last inspection when they were found to be "wearing, but not to worn to pass yet", so I knew that they would need to be done before next year. Guess what, its next year.

This is also compunded by the fact that the WJ has a known issue with front brake rotors warping under normal use after a couple of years and the last time I did brakes, about 2 years ago, I did not replace the rotors, just the pads.

So you take all this and you have the oppurtunity to upgrade the springs and shocks cause, If I have to take them off to do the bushings I might as well put better stuff back on. This goes for the brakles and rotors as well.

You have to realize that I am in this vehicle for alot more years since I replaced the motor back when we went to Wisconsin for Camp Jeep. So I have to make it last.

The changes and repairs are as follows.

1. Repair or replace all control arm bushings. This does not happen easily because they can't be replaced. The control arms must be replaced because Jeep nor any other retailer sells the bushings for a WJ. Just one set but you can't get them. With this in mind I took to diging in my pile-o-parts and found I had some control arms which came off a Jeep. They needed alot of work and they needed bushings but I could replace them and clean them up so then I had the lowers covered.(or so I thought)

I started with this

They definitely needed some work. So I used the shop press which I thought I had wasted money on, and got its cost per use down even lower since I found another project for it and pressed out the old bushings. It my research for this work I had sourced some bushings from Matt up at Independent4x which I wanted to be my plan 'B'. I wanted to put back in the arms the same bushings which came in them. After what seemed like 20 Phone calls and some internet research I found that the Control arms possibly came out of an XJ and they were Black Diamond Susp. brand. they used Daystar bushings and Superlift would not have them in stock until the middle to end of November. Hence I went to plan 'B', Thank God for Matt. I will expand on that later.

After some work on the control arms I ended up with a pile of old bushings.

And some dirty control arms.

I then pulled out the grinder I thought I would not need again until I find the money for a welder, and cleaned up the CA's. They turned out better than I would have thought

I think they were powdercoated so I tool it all off so I could start from scratch and do paint. I have not heard to many good things about painting over powdercoat.

Then I hit them with some primer. I wanted to make sure they did not rust to much before the rest of the car.

Then I had to choose the final paint color. I thought for a minute about a bright neon color, then thought of colormatching the car's paint, then I looked over on the shelf and saw I had semigloss Black. That made up my mind.

Then I had to figure our the bushings. The only thing I could get my hands on that would work were some YJ leaf spring bushings. They were the right I.D. 1.25" bu they were alittle too wide. I needed 2.5" flange to flange. They were 2.75" or so. Plus the sleeves were long as well. This would involve cutting the poly, and the sleeve. I cut one half per set and then shortened the sleeve. This is the final product.

I think they will do fine. They are 16.25" center to center. The stock ones are about 15.875" center to center. I think this will give me enough change in my pinion angle that it will work well.

When these go in they will be joined with OME 2" lift springs all around and OME shocks. I have the trim spacers, if I will need them to adjust the rake. The stock springs, Spring spacers and the Prerunner shocks will come off and the suspension will have a much better ride. I will still ahve to replace the bushings in the upper links but they are stock jeep bushings and I can get them for $9 each everywhere.

2. Repair or replace all brake components, i.e. pads and rotors. Why put back the same stock stuff again. I have done the whole thing once before. This time I am putting drilled and slotted rotors and ceramic pads. This should help with the issues of warped rotors. More to come on that when they are delivered.

Nice work there Dr. Bliley.

Sounds a lot like what the ZJ needs...

'Cept I am just gonna replace the CA's with some "re-furb'ed" stockers (and you know where I intend to get the donors).

Still undecided on OE or Poly bushings.

Shocks are still good (20K road only miles on RE TwinTubes).

Would LOVE to do some OME coils, but they are just not in the budget any time soon.

As for brakes, replaced front pads only 20K ago. Have not touched the rears.

And last year at inspection I was told I had a rear axle seal starting to leak but "it wasn't getting on the brakes so it's not bad enough to fail" so I guess I have to do them too.

Now I have an "ABS" warning light that won't go off so I think the sensor might be fouled. Probably from some thing leaking on it.

Fun.

I thought about doing some fancy PowerSlot vented discs and Hawk pads, but will prolly just do the "premuim" grade stuff from the parts store since.

I guess I know what the first project in the newly re-wired garage is gonna be...

Just posting an update. I have not begun the install yet. All the parts just finally came in. Got Drilled and Slotted Rotors for the front, Pads are Raybestos Premiums for low dust and quiet stops.

Have new bushings for the upper control arms up front as well as the axle bushings. got new bushings for the upper Tri-link in the rear. I am not sure if I will need to replace the ball joint on the center of the link until I take it off. If I need it it is stocked well locally. (Sorry about pic quality, Cell Cam sucks)

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e341/tjbliley/Jeep%20Stuff/WJ%20Stuff/110408_08502.jpg

Got all the LCA's assembled, new OME springs and shocks.

(Gonna be selling a Budget Boost for a WJ soon)

I think the combination of Poly and Rubber should help keep the ride quality in the good range. OME Springs and shocks will also go a long way towards that. Should have firm feel, but still soft highway ride.

I should be able to get on this next week I hope. Should not take a great deal of time. Longest part will be the pressing of bushings in the axle and tri-link. Shop press is finally paying off. Hopefully this will be done by Thanksgiving so I can get it inspected by the end of the month. I may try to time it so I can get a 12 and squeeze 1 more month out of this plan. Have to wait and see.
