View Full Version : New Cage for Me

I started the new cage for my CJ over the weekend. I had hoped to make more pregress last noght but my liner on my mig gun gave up on me, so I'll be out today picking up a new one. I'll post some better pic's later tonight.
This cage should be more family friendly than "extreme". I was looking to gain 3-point seat belts in the back and a little more clearance at the B-post. I will be copying a bit of what I did on Jay's cage just for style points though.
Any input would be welcome....

rough crowd!
Considering its trail usage, I'd imagine you could get away with a hula hoop and some duck tape...

I think you should finish that up, take it out of your CJ, and then walk it up to the front of your shop to be installed it into mine :)
Looks Great!!!

I think you need to replace that yellow household string with at least some 1/4" poly rope...no way that's gonna hold up in a rollover...:flipoff:
Other than that, it looks GREAT!!!

Thanks! I've got A LOT of details left but at least that major fab is over. Only have about 8 hours in it. would be less if I were shorter. I did 3 different diaginals over the front passenger area and all were a problem either to my head or the seats folding forward or something. So I ended up back with the simple spreaders. I guess i can put my radios back up there now...LOL

how much does that weigh, and roughly how much $ in material did it take to make it? (if you don't mind me asking)

took little over 60' of tube so depends on current price. i paid 4.25 per foot. the plate steel I had already. The 1x3 tube for the gussets cost me $35 (I bought a 6' piece). Next will be paint just regular old spray bomb gloss black. Welding wire/gas and flap discs(2).
Material alone if I had to buy it all,,,,I would guess $400 to $500.
As to the wieght,,, I can pick it up by myself and move it around so under 200#. I would guess somewhere in the 125-150# range ,,, Maybe?
Don't forget the tools it takes, and the shop, soooo add another $30k:agree:

NO!
What type and size tubing did you use?
Its 1.75" .120 wall DOM. I'm just that good....
Yeah, you really need to come out of that shell and stop being so modest.

Since mother nature has turned on the freezer this week I decided to build a makeshift spraybooth inside the shop to shoot my paint on the cage.
As much as Seth wanted me to paint it the same color as the body color of the Jeep, I did not have enough of that paint to do the job. So I used the Rustoleum Gloss Black I had and shot it though my cheap spray gun. I need to touch up a few spots but the paint turned out great! I'll post some pics later today.
So much for looking custom. ;)

I had the black already and not enough of the white to even come close. I did get it out and check though. When I found the can I had with less the 1/2 full of paint I decided just to go with the black. This also keeps with the black and white theme.

I put on my respirator sprayed the paint and walked out until the next morning. The shop smells wonderful. imaging kerosene heater+paint fumes= stinky LOL The shop is not air tight enough for me to worry about  but it does smell pretty good.
Looks great. Did you recheck the soft top??
