I searched the threads and did not come across this question...so here goes. Can i take the long bed from my '88 and put it on a short bed '89? From what i can tell, the wheel base is the same 119.6. Does any one know why this would not be a simple bolt on?

I believe the bed is unibody. or am i wrong?

There's a frame under the bed on MJ's. I would ass-ume the frame is longer on the long bed models than the short bed units.

Frame is different. Gas tank is mounted to the bed, not the frame. Wheelbase is different. Go to www.Comancheclub.com/forums/index.php and sign up. they are great with info and no flaming for asking what would seem to be the "dumb question".

like Jerry said, the short answer is no. The 7' beds are 6" longer in the front and 6" longer in the rear. Not saying it can't be done, but it's not a simple bolt-on affair.

And you should sign up over on CC, too:agree:

ok...thanks. 4x4marine had a good idea...i could take the drivetrain from the 89 (4x4, 4.0) and swap into my 88 (2wd, 4cyl). And i will sign up...

thanks all.

the 4.0 swap is a fairly simple affair......I did it to mine a few months ago. If you wanna go that route, I'll be more than happy to lend you a hand. There's a few specific things you have to pay attention to, but it's well worth the effort.
