i got a chevy dana 60. it's old and rusty... but the hubs feel really smooth and the lockouts work flawlessly. gonna take it apart as soon as i get the tools and stuff for the lockouts.
it's upside down... so it LOOKS like a driver drop... but it's PASSENGER drop.

the hubz. cleanest part of the axle.

the short side and the shock mount (which will be cleaned, and the mount cut off)

for $400, it's always a good deal. I have a set of old calipers if you need them for cores, you are welcome to them. You planning on keeping the dually hubs or going to a single wheel hub? Unless you are running H1 wheels, that is gonna be a wide mofo!.
Do the muratic acid stuff you can get at lowes in the painting isle, cleaned up rust way better that a ton of flap wheels and sanding discs.

Search around pirate for the mixture...bus it's basically the muratic acid stuff (like $4 gallon at lowes) and water and you put the stuff in a trough and let it sit for a bit.

So i spent an afternoon to tear it apart and start cleaning it up. it's rusty on the outside, gunky in the hubs, but the diff was SO CLEAN i doubt they're original gears. this is what an angle grinder braided wire wheel does to rust:

tomorrow i'll finish cleaning both and primer them both so they'll be clean and pretty and ready to be installed...

i want to run SW hubs, but i need to find a place to get them from. are the calipers chevy or ford? if they're ford (dual piston) can i get new knuckles that are ford on a chevy axle so i can run dual piston?
also, if i'm gonna get 35 spline outers do i need new spindles? i guess i do cuz i'm gonna be running ford outers... so much stuff to worry about! fukkk.

I dunno about chevy, but for my ford 35 spline, I used stock spindles

Just use your chevy outter knuckles and get chevy 35 spline outter shafts and use your stock spindles if they are in good shape. No need to add an extra expense of new outters if you don't have to. Look around for a use set of SRW hubs, it'll be a ton cheaper than new.
Don't forget, chevy outters are a tad longer than ford outters. I had fords on my chevy and couldn;t get the snap ring back on because the stick out past the spindle was too short.

thanks for all the info ron! so i can use stock everything, even tho my knuckles are in shitty shape... i'd like to get cleaner / newer knuckles, use my spindles, and get SRW hubs to throw on there. the only thing that i still don't get is if i can run dual piston calipers on the chevy (IE: are the caliper brackets the same for both dual and single piston?)

reid racing knuckles FTW!

I assume you're planning on cross over or full high steer, but your knuckles are fine. Why the extra expense of new outters when you don;t need them? Replace the kingpins and run 'em...unless they are cracked, but I doubt that.
Maybe new outters if you are planning huge tires, tons of HP and bouncing off every rock you see so you can justify the extra stud hole in the high steer arm, but i'd wager to bet your cherokee will nreak long before the stock outter will.

i'm running 40's or 42's.
the problem with my knuckles is that 1/2 of the bolts are broken off in the top and bottom. getting them out after 30 years will be a complete PITA.
also, can you still explain the caliper situation?
Big Ron

I'd just run the stock GM calipers. They will stop a 42 easily. I ran hydroboost with stock 60 calipers up front and 1/2 ton calipers on the rear and could easily lock the tires up with a gentle tap.
You can get new brackets to run 1/2 calipers if you wanted to fit a 15" wheel with no grinding, but it really isn;t needed.
Both of thise are a single piston caliper and work great.
I have a set of cores if you want them to take to advance and get new ones. I think a loaded set with cores is less than $100/

I have dual piston calipers up front that work great. Got 3/4 ton front calipers in the rear which also work great.
I am pretty sure he wasn't plannin on it, but Anton, do NOT get 15" rims. 17" FTW!!
I also upgraded knuckles because, like Anton, I beat the shit out of stock knuckles trying to get it apart.

ron, i'll take those calipers! thanks for the offer.
yeah i'll prolly stick with the bigger rims, and get at least un-fucked knuckles... maybe upgraded ones. we'll see.
most importantly, i need a better brake booster.

I run completely stock brake parts (MC and booster) and it works perfectly. Maybe the ZJ is just better.... !!!!

I ran hydroboost and MC off a 94 k2500 with the stock prop vavle that came on it.
4 wheel discs and i could lock them up with ease.

so, big ron, you got a few minutes to come by and take a look at my axles? i have this slight problem before i order all the gears and install kits and such - i have no idea what year make model my rear axle is, and i can't tell what year and gears i have in the front one. once i know, i'm going straight to the computer and ordering parts.
you sound like the kind of guy who can tell that kind of stuff easily. haha.
thanks.

Just read the BOM number on the web of the pumpkin casting...that'll give you every bit of info on the axle you'll need. It's a kingpin chevy axle....right? The parts are the same from the 70s all the way throught the newer ones. Call Matt up at Independent4x...he's right of the atlee/Elmont exit and has pretty much any part you'll need for that axle.
Heck, since I am getting old, I'd likely just take the axle up to him and have hime do the gears etc so all you have to do is go pick up the completed axle...but either way, he will have every part you'll need...either in stock or it'll get there very quickly.
But yeah, chevy 60 stuff and 14 bolt stuff uses the same parts from old to new.
