Recently I have noticed a odd vibration/whiring noise coming from the front right of the Jeep(but not engine). I think I have found the problem. It looks as though my spring under leaf pack is compressing up and hitting the tie rod. Any recomendations on how to eliminate this problem? Thanks

SOA swap :D but that calls for a whole new steering setup...(SOA = Spring Over Axle)

NEW Stock CJ springs are hard to come by so IF you want to try to do a process of elimination you can pick up or fabricate some shackle lifts to move the spring down away from the tie rod and see if that helps granted if u fab shackles and they eliminate the problem make SURE they are safe enough to be permanent if you say screw I will leave them on there if the vibration goes away.

1. A YJ spring kit...not a cheap solution ~$360+ from (exlcuding YJ springs)

2. 2+ budget boost kit...

3. IF you can find a CJ in a junkyard take the springs...

Easiest would be the shackle check - new 2" shackles aren't that expensive though if you don't feel like fabbing your own or feel safer doing so

I put new lift springs in december so this is why I'm surprised this is happeneing. I also still have my stock leaf springs. If I were to ever want to do SOA the lift springs I have on now would have to much of an arch right?

most likely depending on the amount of lift they offer...CJ springs are very narrow and what usually happens with SOA projects is the person either goes with YJ springs or waggy springs.

Waggy springs also extend your wheelbase a good amount for running 37+ tires so can gain more stability as well...

Ok, so with the SOA on stock cj axles I would have to have some one fab new spring perches on the axles right? Also can anyone explain what axle wrap is? I've always heard about it but I've never gotten a good explination for it. Thanks Benzo for the info.

After trouble shooting for a while I have come to the conclusion that my initial thought that the tie rod assembly was hitting the spring was wrong. I believe I need to change out the wheel bearings. My Haynes manual was very vauge, at the least, on the explanation for changing the bearings. I'll be looking around on the internet to see what kind of direction I can get.Any one have any helpful advice? Once again thanks for the help.

yeah, with a SUA suspension, the tierod to spring ratio hasn;t changed much. Wheel bearing are fairly easy, just get a good set of punches.
Pull off the rotor/hub combo by removingthe spindle nuts and lock rings etc...
The outter wheel bearing will slide right out since it's help in the thrust washer and spindle assemble. he inner bearing is held in by the seal. Pry the seal out (seal remover actually works very well) and the inner bearing will come out.

Take you punches and remove the races from each side with a big hammer. Re install in the opposite order.

If you are not sure if it's the wheel bearings, jack up the from the axle and grab the wheel at 12 and 6 oclock and give it a wiggle. If it moves, you need to tighten the wheel bearing preload by adjusting the spindle nuts.

They may just need to be repacked and tightened.

Haynes manual is junk. If you want a step by step with good mages a factory service manual is what you will want...but is a few more $$$ than the haynes.

oh, and if you're still not sure if it's tie rod, grab the wheel at 3 and 9 o clock and wiggle. Any movement there and you'll feel it in the tie rod ends.

I know I know yall have practically been holding my hand on this one however if you could just tell me what all I will need besides new bearings. What all do I need seal wise? or any other parts that go with the new bearings. I'm pretty sure I can manage the mechanical part by just re-tracing my steps in reverse. Thanks once again

Inner and outter bearings. they will come with the races that you will tap in after you removed the old races. A new seal for the back of the hub and grab a tube of rtv for when you bolt the hub back on. just a little dab to keep the grease from seepin out.
Get a brass drift for pressing the new races in and you can use a normal steel punch or the like to remove the old races.

That's it...you'll reuse your spindle nuts etc...

I went to change out the bearings today and I got held up with the spindle nut. Does any one have the correct size socket for a Dana 30 front axle for the spindle nut? (It's huge)Thanks

Adam - I might have one, or else I gave it to Dan when I sold him the cj8. I'll look tonight to see if I still have it. I'll call you to let you know.
