View Full Version : Toying with buying a truck...

I have been in the market for a 5' x 10' or 6' x 10' trailer for a while now to make home improvement projects easier.

(I am tired of borrowing one.)

And while discussing them with the CFO recently she suggested the possibility of just buying a basic pick-up truck instead.

So I have been doing a little looking...

And thinking Mid-70's to Mid-80's Ford or Mid-70's to Late-80's Chebby/GM.

Why?

I like the body styles and they are reasonable easy to work on and get parts for (I believe most of the GM stuff is interchangeable over a long period of years).

Would love a V8, but I know the Ford 300 I-6 is a pretty bullet-proof motor. GM seems mostly to be 305's, 350's and some 4.3L's in later models.

Prefer a manual trans. Plain and simple.

Only NEED 2WD, but would not turn down a 4WD.

Not planning on turning it in to a "project", other than general maintainence and repairs.

Anyone have any experience with any of the above vehicles?

Anything, years, models, motors, trannys, etc to look out for, avoid or look for?

Some quick interweb searches today reveal A LOT more Fords than Chebby's/GMC's. And $1000-1200 seems to be a common price for a running/driving truck.

Thanky.

Going to check out the 89 Chevy and the 84 F150 tomorrow.

Also found an 88 F250 4WD, gas motor, 5-speed in rough shape for $1000.

Needs front tires, body rough, banged up but not rusted or rotted, interior rough, looks like a speedo cable hanging of the bottom, broken hood cable and the bottom of the motor seems to be pretty covered with oil.

Was definately a "work truck" in it's previous life.

But it is a 3/4T, with a stick and a V8...

Thoughts?

It will end up costing you a lot more than $1000, probably. You can get stuff in better shape for not much more initial investment

Really?

Running/driving/inspectable?

2- or 4-WD?

The 88 was in really rough shape so it's off the list.

Just called a guy about an 86 F250 4WD w/ 190k for $1000.

Currenty running, driving AND inspected.

1989 Chevy truck. 4.3 L, 5 speed, runs good. 243,071 miles on the body, rebuilt motor with around 41,000 miles. No cracks in dash, could use a good cleaning and paint job. Current inspection.

Is it a 6-foot or 8-foot bed? it is an 8 foot bed

How many miles are on it? 243,000 on body, 42,000 on rebuilt motor

Any known mechanical or engine issues? no

What kind of condition is the cab / bed in? good shape, a couple of small dents, no
cracks in the dash

Any major parts rebuilt or replaced? Motor was rebuilt from the head up, new
alternator about 2 months ago.

Any major or recent work done to it? Just the rebuilt motor.

Truck runs well and would do fine for what you are looking for. If you have any other questions or would like to come see it please feel free to call me.

Going tomorrow afternoon to look at the 89.

The 4.3L / NV3500 could also be future drivetrain donor for the YJ.

Hopefully gonna check this one out too...

From what I can tell, this should be an SM465, granny low 4-speed, not a 3-speed.

Carb'ed 350, no computer...
