Humor me here...

Anyone have a REALISTIC idea what a "basic" or "stock" rebuild on an early 90's SBC V8 would cost?

What about if just the head gasket was blown?

Would you still do a rebuild?

Whatcha mean?

You paid $700 for your motor in running condition?

I'd actually prefer NOT to have to do a swap, thinking more of a remove-rebuild-replace on the cheap deal.

Anyone have contact infor for Roger from RCTR?

Does he ever stick his head in around here?

I had his number waaaayyyyy back when I was on the RCTR board and I had my blue CJ but it's long gone now.

He might be a good person to talk to...

Yes, I gave 700 for the motor, No AC, No distributor, Had headers and alt. I put it on a stand for two years and then after a lot of other things you would not need to do it started right up. I do have some bugs in the charging system. But I think the $12 plug I got at NAPA today will fix that. ( the alt is not sending a charge back to the bat ) ALL and it only leek at the oil filter

Thanks...

Now for some more thoughts...

Say you had an early 90's Chebby 1500 4WD pickup with 200-ish K miles on it.

And the head gasket blew.

You need to get it running and driving, no need for big horsepower (stok was fine) and cost/time is an issue.

Would you do a "basic" rebuild? Like have the block and head checked then replace the pistons, rings, rods etc with stock-type stuff (like, say, a $200 rebuild kit from Summit) keeping the original crankshaft, etc?

Would you go through and replace all the gaskets (with something like a $50 gasket kit from Summit) and leave all the hard parts alone?

Would you just replace the head gasket and call it a day?

I think you need to check the motor and let it tell you what you need. No matter what if you only do what is cheapest and quickest you will do it all over again if it is not what the motor needed to have done. Do a leak down/compression test.

Yeah...

I should find out today if I am going to pursue this any further.

And no one has even thrown a ballpark figure out there...

Does anyone have any experience doing a "basic" "stock" rebuild?

And how much did it cost?

That would be perfect...

Got a little more info this afternoon:

98 5.7L VORTEC.

195K miles.

Bad head gasket. Unknown if "blown" or just "bad".

Apparently leaking water/coolant in to oil.

Oh, and it comes bolted in to a Silverado 1500 4x4 Shortbed.

One owner, good condition, straight, rust free body, solid frame.

Current owner undecided if he wants to fix it or just get rid of it.

I am still undecided if I am going to pursue it further...

Half tempted to buy this and stick it in the garage for possible future replacement of the 4.3 if I keep the current truck...
