I had the problem with mine. Try taking it to a shop and having them do a flat repair. They change the valve stem and clean the rim up, sometimes junk gets caught in the bead and it will leak. Should cost you about $10

Sure, bad valve stems happen. You could try to tighten them yourself. Another possibility is that piece of junk could have gotten in the bead when it was mounted.

rear coils keep coming unseated and they are bowing like no other..ballistic fab upper coil mounts with coil traps will be installed hopefully before bigdogs so my spring can be straight again and then it will be retained at the top and bottom..still might get limiting straps too.
And if anyone wants to know..we figured out the grinding noise I was hearing..for a first attempt to fix it, we changed t-case chain
http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa45/zj95maxx/random008-1.jpg

Seats came today but wasn't home, they will be here tomorrow. Thursday/Friday we will be installing seats with custom fabbed brackets, moving front axle forward and adjusting rear axle a tiny bit.
Ordered rear upper coil trap/mounts
http://ballisticfabrication.3dcartstores.com/assets/images/framecoilmount2.jpg
My spring is bowing and the post needs to be moved, and this way I wont need post extensions but will prob still get limiting straps, but at least my springs will not be popping out.
That should be all that we are doing before the 14th (bigdogs). Hopefully we will be able to trailer my shit up there.

Day started out by trying to drill out the rear pinch welds..Didn't quite work and we only had a day so we decided to say no on the coil traps and just make some post extensions.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/rock_crawler/Maxxs%20stuff/DSC03270.jpg
Then we realized, because the coil already bows that when the coil compresses, it hits the bottom of the said extension.
So..Whatever..30 min of work for nothing

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/rock_crawler/Maxxs%20stuff/DSC03281.jpg
No more coil poppage..unfortunately the bracket sticks out so when the tire flexes it hits on the inside..so wheel spacers will be ordered for the rear to stop that issue.
Any questions?

Found out it was sloppy pinion..tightening it didnt work so the night before I went wheeling, we pulled it all apart, removed a shim or two, tightened it down, fixed the problem, didnt have time to make winch mount but we decided to install new steering box..boy was that a PITA

http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa45/zj95maxx/DSC03474.jpg
after wheeling with 1 upper, it indeed DOES flex a ton more, but its almost too much and it makes stuff rub worse and makes me need limiting straps..So i might put it back on, who knows.
Went wheeling with a big group, had a great day, didnt think the trail was worthy of the claws so just cruised on the A/T's

You took the wrong upper off. The cast in upper is strong as hell. Its far less likely to break. The welded on factory one is a big piece of shit and is well known to part with the axle housing even when running two.
So.. .at a minimum hook the cast one back up. As for running just one? Fucking with fate, if you ask me.

I could get you pages of people that do it on grands.
It will prob get back in after I get a new bushing, too much flex for my taste
but as for the saftey thing..its fine.
Actually, its not. I don't give a rats testicle if people do it. They fail. All you have to have is one 3/8" bolt fail and your front end is wadded up into a tree. Its worse on a radius arm suspension as you're relying on even less total support of the axle.
Bolts break, brackets tear, shit happens. A lot. We went through a period where TJs were tearing track bar mounts from the frame. Of course, according to the internet, that can't happen... until you're in the middle of the hammers and are staring at one.... again.

actually yes, my front drivers side lower broke the welds at crozet, didn't notice till i got on the highway and the front end kept moving around, but thanks to a few on here for some extra hands, and a call to rubicon express for some brackets, and mike warner for welding them, no more problems.

come to think of it, i've seen atleast 4 or 5 rigs at crozet break them off
The TJ/XJ/ZJ front end uppers are under a shitton of load. Radius arm makes it a bunch worse. When the axle articulates the upper on the stuffed side wants to roll forward, while the upper on the down side wants to roll back.
That's part of the reason there's more flexibility out of one arm. There's no fighting from side to side. Full Traction did a kick ass TJ long arm lift that actually maintained the factory 5 link setup. Its actually quite limber. But the radius arm is EASY. If I ever link the feep, it'll probably get radius arms for that very reason. EASE.

i`d say hes trying to say he wants to start a 4x4 buisness not a club LLC has to do with owning a company like someone else stated "limited liability corporation" usually the route you would take if you plan on being the soul propriator (think i spelled that right?) or a partner ship of 2-3 poeple...after 3 its better to go corp. its set up so that you can only be sued for what the buisness is worth rather than taking from your own personal accounts and or property. unless you peirce the corp. veil which implies you have no longer treated the buisness as a seperate entity and have treated it as personal property then allowing you your self as an indevidual to be sued along with the company itself....using a company card to go grocery shoping would be grounds for a creditor to be able to include your personal assets as one with the company itself.
anyways shouldnt have anything to do with a club
pardon my horrible spelling and punctuation lol

If you are an LLC you can have different % distributions with the profit. If your a corp you have to distribute per ownership %. You can be a LLC and still file taxes as an SCORP. This allows you to not have to pay med care and SS out of pocket at end of year. You still have to pay taxes on profit though. Just make sure you get an accountant.

A welding tip... try and make the bead even and straight across the top and bottom. It also looks a little cold at the edges along the bottom, but undercut a little at the top. The torch is moving close to the work at the top and far at teh bottom

You really should reattach that front upper before all this work is wadded up into a schoolbus.
it will go back on when I get the t&t customs truss with superflex joints..xmas time
Meanwhile, what's the plan for reinforcing the unibody and a cage?
zj95maxx
11-23-2007, 02:57 PM
cage is coming
as for reinforcing..umm..longarms,front bumper that ties into radiator, which ties into tube fenders which ties into sliders, which ties into long arm brackets which ties into unibody stiffeners which ties into crossmember?
cage is all I can do basically.
Maybe make a bar going from UCA to UCA on the rear, but I dont see the point, my unibody is about as stiff as I can get it besides putting a cage of somesort in/on it.
You can start by boxing the unibody rails. The truck is going to start self destructing if you don't give it some reinforcement between the coil towers, shockmounts and put a proper internal cage with an X between the B-pillar.
You got a lot tied up in a marginal platform. The entire vehicle is held together by folded sheet metal that was designed to be a mommy mobile. If you spend the time to reinforce it now, you won't be chasing cracks down the rails later.
All of the unibody platforms love to crack.... the trick is getting ahead of them with reinforcement.
Seth (exo-cages aren't structural, btw... protect the occupants, not the sheet metal.)

I have unibody stiffiners by clayton which are stronger than boxing the frame rails. Here is some proof for ya bud.
thanks elliot
1.) Clayton longarm kit
Anyone who wheels ZJ's has heard the name Clayton Offroad before. They make, in my opinion, the best longarm kit that available. However I think I will be modifying it a bit to tailor to future needs of the vehicle and for bling factor.
All ZJ's/XJ's/WJ's/KJ's are unibody, meaning the frame and body are in itself one piece. It is a cheaper way of mass producing vehicles which is all Daimler Chrysler cares about. Trying to design suspension around this can be very tricky but thanks the the popularity of the 4x4 sport almost every approach has been conceived and executed. Manipulating the unibody is inevitable when building one of the afformentioned rigs into a capable crawler. For all information on welding related to the unibody, please take a moment to read the Unibody Welding Bible. Thanks to a good friend of mine Kris Fraser for the comprehensive research on unibody strengths and how to modify them.
Option A: Sleeve the frame rail with chopped 4x4 3/16". Plug weld throughout. This is pretty easy to do with the correct tools. This is pictured below. Graphically shown: Green area being the ZJ frame and the orange part being new
http://fototime.com/2BF7446DC15EB1A/standard.jpg
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a349/Puma297/longarms/sleeve1.jpg
Option B: Weld a smaller size SUBFRAME onto bottom of existing unibody. This is what the Clayton kit uses. Links are not as easily mountable to this type of setup and you lose approx 1" of clearance at the frame. Also a pic is shown below.
http://www.mallcrawlin.com/productreviews/claytonlongarms/claytonla029.jpg
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a349/Puma297/longarms/sleeve2.jpg
The plate on the ends are used for the analasys. The force to the frame rail is applied to the 2" portion sticking off the right side. The frame rail is anchored and the opposing end from where the force is applied. The force is 1000LB. This is the deformed DIY Sleeve (option 1).
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a349/Puma297/longarms/sleeve3.jpg
And here is the subframe (option 2).
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a349/Puma297/longarms/sleeve4.jpg
If you look at the numbers to the right of the framerails you can see that the subframe actually moves less. This was surprising to me. These aren't exactly the same forces applied while wheeling but it gives you an idea of its strength. Tests on torsional rigidity would need to be run to get a more comprehensive analysis of its true strength. (Thanks to Kris for crunching the numbers on software I can't afford. )
so, I have that part already down. Frame rails are beefed up, also, these "unibody support frame stiffiners (subframe)" are welded to my sliders...which is welded to bumper..and so on..cage is next
try not and down talk me like I dont know anything about unibodys and stiffening them up as much as possible, I do my research. I do listen to your words and I do not turn them away, but again, I have done my research.
Your answer could have been 'the clayton kit addresses the rails'.
It doesn't address the control arm brackets on the axle, it doesn't address the shock mounts and it doesn't address the coil buckets. Those parts fail too. For every guy that posts on the internet that it works great, there's some other guy that tried it and found out the hard way whether it was great or not. I'm the guy that breaks stuff.
Like it or not, I have built up a lot of vehicles either professionally or with my buddies. The first ZJ I helped put 35s on was in 2000... and guess what, he ripped a coil bucket off and chased unibody cracks until he finally had to subframe it. I ran Moab in 1999 with a good friend who was running 35s on an XJ. At the time, there were FEW XJs on 35s and he ran into all sorts of coil bucket problems, control arm bracket issues and shock mount issues. Eventually that car was so trashed that the doors wouldn't open.
Instead of thinking I'm pissing on your parade, wonder if I've seen somebody already ruin a great ride doing the same thing.

Your ride is sweet and you have done a great job so take in the info that you can use and let the rest roll off. There is always things we can teach each other. Thats the great thing about being a part of jeepers. The info also helps the dumb shits like me that don't know anything about jeeps.

hydro pump and j20 steering box
http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa45/zj95maxx/fab012.jpg
Make 100% sure that your pump is moving enough fluid. I don't care what PSI its at, the volume has to be huge. I've been through 5 pumps since I went hydro assist (which was in 2002) and almost all of them have fried due to too much psi, not enough volume causing cavitation.
If the volume is too low, you'll also lose steering at idle. It'll turn, but you'll have zero assist. Take a blip of the gas to get her to turn.
good luck. hydro is a wicked PITA to get really right and reliable.

whats wrong with agr?
what PSC box..think the xj one would work? cant find a zj one
Back in the day, they were fine. The current owner of PSC owned it (if memory serves). He sold it and they went on to making lousy pumps and boxes and offering horrible customer service. You MIGHT get lucky and get one that doesn't howl, but if you do, good luck in getting them to make it right.
PSC made a mistake with a box I had them rebuild and they OVERNIGHTED the part to me to make it right. KRC spent 2 hours on the phone with me talking me out of their aluminum pump and into their half as expensive iron pump because its what I needed. Both companies make top flight products and offer the customer service to match.
By way of comparison, a buddy ordered a box from AGR last year, got it and it was the wrong ratio. They refused to take it back, as it was now used, even though the mistake was irrefutably theirs.

yea I would stay clear of AGR with the customer service stories I've heard. PSC would be my choice.
PSC 2nd choice. KRCpower.com. Best pump I've ever used. 100% new, not a rebuilt TC.
How about just adding a remote reservoir to the stock pump? Is there not enough pressure? I'm just asking because I don't know anything about setting up hydro steering.
Mike,
Since the power steering system is closed loop, its always moving the same fluid around the system, so a reservoir only helps with cooling and it does give you a more consistent line pressure (less weird pressure drops as the ram cycles). The trick to an assist steering setup is having enough volume through the pump at a high enough pressure that it can cycle the ram AND the steering box without cavitation or slow flow.
Think of it relative to a garden hose vs. a fire hose. Both can put out say 100 psi. If the fire hose is doing it, its moving a LOT more water. The same is true for the assist. A stock pump can do ok... and it WILL work, sort of. It just won't be 100% assist at 900rpm (which is the target for a manual trans while rock crawling). An auto is a little more forgiving as it cycles the idle up higher anyway.

but just to clear something up, it's still a good idea to get a new pump even if the auto is more forgiving, right?
I've never seen a stock pump work an assist WELL. It'll work, but will be shitty at idle and will take a little gas to get it to turn. Meanwhile... assist on a Dana 30??? I chew up ball joints on the 44 outers like clockwork. My 60 front never cared, but I can't see putting it on the 30.
BTW... the ram MUST MUST MUST be mounted from axle to tie rod. If you mount it to the drag link it WILL tear the steering box from the frame OR destroy the sector shaft, OR a lovely combination of things. Only parallel with the tie rod is acceptable.
EDIT: don't let ANYONE give you shit about running a ram on road. It drives perfectly safely, with proper return to center. Since you have a drag link, it can't over steer or do anything wanky. Between the Feep and the TJ, I have over 60k miles on a hydro assist (45k on the TJ, 15 on the Feep)

You should look into pulling that dash and re-doing the dash bars and a pillar bars. Push the foward. It will make it a lot safer on the road. Unless you plan on wearing a helmet when you drive, your head will be nice and fucked if you wreck. If you look at race cars those bars are a lot closer to the firewall. There's a reason for it.

Petersons did an article some time back that stated if you run a full cage you should wear a helmet of some sort, at least when wheeling b/c now the cage can crack your melon even if you do not go over. They also stated that street driven vehicles shouldn't have cages b/c your not likely to wear a helmet while driving to work. Although it could be a good idea:agree:
Everything we do is about the compromises.
I do agree that the dash bar and A pillar are not in the best location but I also understand that you may have limits that you need to work with also.

ok I edited this post back to here.....lets not get out of hand again...Maxx I deleted back to here because i didn't want to have to close your whole update thread because you do have a lot of good stuff on here.....all criticism is for information purposes of the givers experiences and such..to be taken as you wish but try to take it well...without jackass remarks. simply defend your choices on your basis for making them. we all have been hit with criticism at one point or the other. Just remember, some things people tell you are from first hand experiences and are just trying to keep you from making mistakes they have made or have seen others make resulting in a not so good outcome.....Lets all try to be adults....
Thanks all for your cooperation:)

Maxx you may want to look into a custom dash which would enable you to tie the front hoop into the front crossmember by running some bars through the firewall. This would allow you to run the a pillar right up against the unibody lines and push the dash bars further away from you. Also remember that if you block your line of site with the bars a stupid trooper or inspector is prob. gonna gig you.

Are you going to tie this in to something structural?
And aren't you supposed to put a slug through plated connection so that the bolts cant shear off?

he will eventually. :p
maxx, seth is right about the V.
Edit: post 225 isn't maxx's ZJ... my b.
Exos are for looks. Internal cages are for safety. Maxx is going about this the right way and will net a far safer structure in case of catastrophe.

plates will have tube running from them to the sliders and or clayton subframe..keep in mind this cage is NOT done yet. still have MANY hours to finish it.
This ZJ will not be my DD forever...so..meh
My CJ has NEVER been a daily driver. But I still maintain its streetability for those days when I need it to be a car. The difference in performance between it and my TJ is negligible off road... and the TJ was definitely not street legal.
To get to the next level of performance requires a SERIOUS commitment to weight reduction, strength and balance. The reason people stopped competing in Jeep based buggies was that they were a tough platform to get ENOUGH performance out of. There are tons of obstacles that can be run with a stock modified rig if you have a cavalier enough attitude regarding body damage.
Its not til you make a BIG step that you will net some serious performance gains.

Here you go..Realized I was NEVER going to finish my passy tube door, so I chopped it up (1 1/2 DOM) for random things such as tube running from plates to "frame" and sliders..

I dont think the tube is going to rip off..and at that angle its still better than nothing and its stronger than welding tube to the thin "frame" that I do have(clayton subframe doesnt go up that far), but again, nothing from positive comments.:)
you also forget that the tube is 1 1/2 dom .120 wall and thats 1/4 shit im welding to. Of course more heat is going to be going to the thinner material.
and as for the top..why? it looks like the bottom..a plate..with bolts..and tube...

Dude - you're really putting a lot of time and effort into your rig and it looks like you are doing a very good job with it! I would bet that you are way ahead of where most of us were at your age (and where lots of us are now!) .
It is important to be able to separate the good constructive criticism from the chatter, and to listen to it. It could save you money in the long run, and help you build a better-performing and safer rig.
