I found this and thought it was useful.
Heavy duty bag or box ($15) to store recovery items - keep items together in one place - not slipping and sliding all over & getting all tangled up
Heavy Canvas "Riggers Bags" work good (available at Harbor Freight/FASTENAL)
make sure that air can flow around the items so they can 'air-out', preventing mildew, rust, etc.
Tow strap ($25-$100)
generally come in 2 inch wide x 20 feet long or 3 inch wide x 30 feet long and are equipped with reinforced loops at each end.
NO METAL HOOKS! on ends
NEVER TIE A KNOT IN A TOW STRAP!
Heavy leather gloves
3/4" "Rated" D-Ring Shackle
Extra parts (retaining pins, receiver pins, cable clamps & thimbles , Hi-Lift rebuild kit, silicon spray, etc.)
25-40 ft. length of winch cable with eyes (that a winch hook can fit through) on each end. Used to extend a winch or 'come-along' cable or as a vehicle tie-down cable. Also useful when pulling out shrubbery that your wife has decided is ugly!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
For winch equipped vehicles
Ready-made recovery kits for winch-equipped vehicles are available from most if not all winch manufacturers.
Tree strap
Snatch block
Winch controller
Choker chain (8-12 ft of grade 80 3/8 chain with open hook on one end and
3/8 chain hook on the other)
Working Loads for Grade-80 Chain(Not from LOWES..)
7/32= 2100 lbs
9/32= 3500 lbs
5/16= 4500 lbs
3/8= 7100 lbs
½= 12000 lbs
5/8= 18100 lbs
3/4= 28300 lbs
If the trails you travel are often blocked with fallen trees or large rocks you might want to consider carrying a choker. If you encounter fallen trees or larges rocks only occasionally, these can be moved with a tow strap. But remember that trees and rocks will quickly cause abrasion cuts on tow straps.
