I found this and thought it was useful.

This List of Tools is for a guideline only. You will have to decide on which tools you really need & have room to carry.
If you're traveling with others, you can divide up and share the tools on your list.

Sturdy and organized toolbox
Vehicle Service Manual, or vehicle technical manual
LED headlamp - handy little gadget when working on your vehicle anytime, provides white light right where you are looking and working. Also, works well for walking around at night. Be sure that the light-head has a good range of up & down adjustment. (the one I use has three LEDs and also has a conventional krypton bulb, which is handy when you need a wider beam of light.)
digital multimeter - even a small cheap one like those sold at Harbor Freight will help solve most electrical problems
torx "T-size" drivers & "E-size" sockets (especially those sizes that you know fit your vehicle)
Allen wrenches &/or socket-hex-drivers (buy quality - 'cheapies always break when you need them most' - Murphy's Law
socket sets, with a good selection of adapters, extensions & swivel-joints
assorted screwdrivers
assorted hand wrenches, combination and double-ended (XJs require both Metric & SAE)
side-cutters
needle-nose pliers
water-pump pliers (AKA 'channel locks' or adjustable slide-lock pliers)
vise-grip pliers
adjustable wrenches ('crescent' wrenches)
spark plug socket
Oxygen Sensor Socket - if you can't gain access to the sensor with a combination wrench
gloves
hand cleaner
quality electrical tape
assorted electrical splices & connectors
assorted cable ties - nylon, not those cheap plastic ties
roll of self-sealing tape - often sold as 'high voltage' tape
liquid latex or GOOP® for sealing, especially electrical connections
silicon adhesive (RTV® , gasket-maker, etc.)
flat, round & triangular files
hacksaw & extra blade(s)
drift punch
small & large chisel
one 12 -16 oz. hammer
one soft face hammer - rubber or plastic on one end and brass or copper on the other end
any specialized tools that are peculiar to your vehicle

I'd like to add an item. A small tub or tube of axle grease. Even a 'handfull' in a zip lock bag can be a lifesaver. Can be used to lube u-joints, slip yokes, and a multitude of other things.
